An heiress has donated land immediately adjacent to the Hobe Sound Scrub Preserve, protecting the property from future development. The donation adds to the protected conservation area in one of Martin County's most environmentally sensitive regions.
The acquisition comes as the heiress has been actively purchasing land throughout the region to prevent development and preserve natural areas. The Hobe Sound Scrub Preserve is a critical habitat for threatened and endangered species, including the Florida scrub jay, gopher tortoise, and other wildlife that depend on the rare scrub ecosystem.
The preserve protects one of the largest remaining examples of sand pine scrub habitat in Martin County. The donated parcel will expand the protected area and create a larger buffer zone for the rare ecosystem, which has been dramatically reduced throughout Florida due to development pressure.
The donation ensures the land will remain in its natural state and be managed as part of the preserve system. Conservation efforts in the Hobe Sound area have become increasingly important as development pressure continues to threaten remaining natural lands in Martin County.
