Republicans and Democrats Unite on Hurricane Preparedness
Florida's hurricane season runs through November, and two congressmen are putting aside partisan differences to encourage residents to get ready. Representative Byron Donalds, a Republican from Congressional District 19 in Southwest Florida, and Representative Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat from Congressional District 23 in Southeast Florida, have created a public service announcement to help Floridians prepare for potential storms. The effort demonstrates that disaster preparedness is a concern that unites people across political lines.
Both lawmakers emphasized that hurricanes pose risks to all Floridians regardless of their political affiliation. "Protecting Florida communities is a shared duty that transcends any political divide," Donalds said, adding that the safety of all Floridians must come first. He encouraged residents to take steps now rather than waiting for a storm to approach. Moskowitz reinforced this message, stating that hurricanes do not discriminate based on party affiliation. "Hurricanes don't care whether you're a Democrat or a Republican; they hit everyone," Moskowitz said. He stressed the importance of beginning preparations immediately instead of waiting until a storm appears on the radar.
The congressmen have outlined specific preparation steps for residents to follow. Floridians should assemble a disaster supply kit containing at least seven days of supplies as soon as possible. Residents need to identify their evacuation zones and understand the distinction between hurricane watches and warnings. Pet owners should develop plans for their animals during emergencies, and business owners should establish emergency procedures for their operations during storm events. Both lawmakers also recommend downloading mobile applications from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to stay informed and connected during hurricane season.
This bipartisan initiative comes as Florida enters an active portion of hurricane season. Donalds is currently running for Florida Governor in this year's elections. Moskowitz announced his candidacy in late May for Florida's 25th House seat, adjusting his campaign focus after the Florida Legislature finalized new redistricting congressional maps in the spring. Despite their different political parties and campaign goals, both representatives have prioritized public safety by working together on this important messaging campaign.
