A Hobe Sound resident has created a Little Free Pantry outside her home to support neighbors struggling with elevated food and gas prices. Jacquelyn Koester established the pantry to make basic necessities and baby essentials available to anyone in the community who needs them, with no requirements or questions asked. Located just steps from her home near the Hobe Sound Public Library, the pantry represents a direct response to financial hardship facing local families.
Koester initially reached out to the community through Facebook when the pantry's supplies began disappearing faster than she could restock them. As prices for essentials climbed, demand for the free resources grew significantly. The response from Hobe Sound residents proved to be substantial and sustained. "I knew the second I posted on that group that Hobe Sound was going to show up for us because that's what we do, we are a tight knit community," Koester said. Donations have regularly filled the pantry's shelves since her appeal, allowing her to maintain consistent access to items for those in need.
The pantry has attracted support from beyond the immediate Hobe Sound area. One individual posted anonymously in the Facebook group, sharing that they had driven from Jupiter specifically to use the resource. "Someone posted in the Facebook group anonymously saying I drove up from Jupiter for this, this is going to help get me through my week," Koester said. These messages of gratitude and impact fuel her commitment to keeping the pantry well-stocked and accessible to everyone who needs it.
Koester views the pantry as evidence that communities continue to support one another despite changing circumstances. She emphasizes that while neighborhoods have evolved over time, the fundamental human desire to help others persists. "The saying it takes a village is so true and the villages look a lot different than they used to, but people still show up for each other and people want to help," she said. What began as a single mother's effort to assist her neighbors has grown into a meaningful community resource that demonstrates how collective action can ease the burden of economic hardship. Those interested in accessing the pantry or learning more about how to contribute can find information through the Facebook group that Koester created for this purpose.
