FEA President Andrew Spar explained the union's reasoning, stating that Floridians are exhausted by unfulfilled promises from elected officials while dealing with a persistent cost-of-living crisis and inadequately funded schools. Spar pointed to families struggling to afford basic necessities including rent, childcare, and groceries. He also noted that recent anti-worker legislation has eroded constitutionally protected rights while students have been neglected in favor of partisan disputes. According to Spar, the upcoming election represents an opportunity for voters to reject out-of-state billionaire interests and choose a governor committed to prioritizing Florida's children, families, and workers.
Jolly, a former member of Congress, expressed appreciation for the union's backing and stated his commitment to Florida's educators. "Florida's teachers and education professionals dedicate their lives to our children and the future of our state," Jolly said. He added that he and his running mate Gwen Graham, whom he selected as his choice for Lieutenant Governor, are dedicated to strengthening public schools, supporting teachers, and ensuring all Florida students have opportunities to succeed. The FEA highlighted specific concerns motivating the endorsement, including the redirection of billions of dollars to what it characterizes as an unaccountable voucher program, restrictions on academic freedom in higher education institutions, and insufficient teacher compensation.
Jolly is competing in a competitive gubernatorial race among multiple candidates. The Republican primary field includes Lieutenant Governor Byron Donalds, investor James Fishback, and former House Speaker Paul Renner. The FEA's endorsement recognizes what the union views as Jolly's consistent advocacy for teachers and education professionals, his support for traditional public schools, and his broader commitment to strengthening communities across the state.
