Martin County Maritime Response Unit is deploying two boats with medics on standby across the northern and southern parts of the county as hundreds of boaters take to local waterways to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend. Lt. Brett Harry with the Maritime Response Unit said the teams are prepared to respond to medical emergencies ranging from stubbed toes to cardiac events and potential spinal injuries.

Boaters launched from Sandsprit Park in Martin County on Friday, including Brendan and Ashley Shannon, who brought their young daughter and puppy onto the water. The Shannons said safety is their top priority when hitting the water. Lt. Harry urged boaters to keep their eyes on the water, designate a sober driver, and pack life vests, whistles and flotation devices before setting sail. "Just have fun and be safe," Harry said.
