Florida homeowners pay the highest average premium in the country at $8,292 in 2026, according to online firm Insurify. Premiums in South Florida generally run high. State insurance regulators said that with more companies and more competition, homeowners should seek better premiums by shopping around.

Security First Insurance is lowering homeowners insurance rates by an average of 5.6%, the latest in a series of rate decreases the Florida-based company has made over the last two years. Based in Ormond Beach, Security First has about 155,000 policies in the state. Melissa Burt DeVriese, president of Security First, said the company is committed to writing more policies in southeast Florida. Insurance companies have been reducing rates or holding them stable as more companies cite a reduction in lawsuits from state reforms. Security First also announced new discounts and a disappearing deductible that rewards claims-free customers by reducing their deductible over time. Over the course of five years, every year the deductible goes down 20 percent as long as the customer doesn't have a loss. Once a loss occurs, the discounted deductible applies, and then it resets back to the full deductible amount.
