A 29-year-old Vero Beach man has been formally charged with murdering his 76-year-old grandmother, who was discovered dead in her home in February. The Indian River County Sheriff's Office announced the charges against Nicholas Leonard Ivey on Friday. He faces both murder and tampering with physical evidence charges in connection with the death of Patricia Ann DiBella. According to investigators, Ivey admitted to killing his grandmother, who had allowed him to live at her residence located at 5090 Fairways Circle north of Vero Beach.
The discovery of DiBella's body came after family members requested a welfare check the day following her death. When deputies arrived at the home, they found Ivey present and took him into custody at that time. Though arrested in February, Ivey remained in custody on other related charges until the sheriff's office formally charged him with murder on June 3. He continues to be held at the Indian River County Jail without the possibility of bond.
In a statement regarding the case, Sheriff Eric Flowers expressed his approval of the investigative work completed by his team. "I am proud of the work our investigations team did to bring justice to Patricia DiBella and her family. No one should lose their life at the hands of someone they trusted and welcomed into their home. I encourage anyone experiencing domestic violence to contact law enforcement," Flowers said. The sheriff's office used the case as an opportunity to remind the community that domestic violence can manifest in different ways and impact people across all backgrounds and circumstances.
Individuals who believe they or someone they know is in danger are urged to take action. The sheriff's office encourages residents to call 911 in emergency situations.
