A man died Saturday night in a vehicle fire near Citrus Boulevard and Pineapple Court in Martin County. Deputies and Martin County Fire Rescue responded just after 9 p.m. to reports of a fully engulfed truck off the side of the road. First responders discovered the driver deceased inside the vehicle, with remains burned beyond recognition.
The incident was initially suspected to be a traffic crash-related fire. However, investigators at the scene ruled out a collision as the cause after a thorough examination. The Martin County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division took over the case and determined the fire likely started when the truck's exhaust ignited dry grass beneath the vehicle. The driver was unable to escape the burning truck, though the reasons why remain unclear.
Detectives have tentatively identified the victim and have reached out to family members. However, a positive identification cannot be confirmed at this time due to the condition of the remains. DNA testing is underway and expected to take several weeks to complete. The victim's name has not been released pending confirmation through DNA analysis.
The Martin County Sheriff's Office continues its investigation into the circumstances of the fatal vehicle fire as authorities work to determine exactly how the fire started and why the driver could not escape.
