For the Love of Paws in Fellsmere has risen from the ashes after a devastating fire on March 9 killed 11 cats and left founder Ted Pankiewicz with burned arms. The community has rallied in response to the tragedy, raising more than $100,000 to help rebuild the sanctuary. Pankiewicz founded the organization in 2014 as a tribute to his late wife, fulfilling a dream she had always wanted to pursue.
"We started this in memory of my wife. Starting a rescue or something like that was always something that she always wanted to do," Pankiewicz said.
The sanctuary operates differently than traditional rescues, serving as a permanent home for pets rather than an adoption center. "We are a sanctuary, we're not a rescue. When your pets come here, they come here for the rest of their life.
We take care of them as our very own," Pankiewicz explained. Beyond providing sanctuary, For the Love of Paws supplies 12 to 15,000 pounds of pet food monthly to senior citizens, disabled individuals, and veterans who are struggling to feed their pets. The organization serves some of the Treasure Coast's most vulnerable residents.
The new facility will be built entirely of steel and include enhanced safety features designed to prevent another tragedy. A security system will alert the fire department directly when smoke is detected, and an interior sprinkler system will be installed throughout the building. "The new building is going to be all steel, and we're going to be having a security system put in where the smoke detectors immediately alert the fire department, and there will be a sprinkler system inside too, which I'm sure will piss off the cats, but it's better," Pankiewicz said. The rebuilt sanctuary will feature a cage-free design with an outdoor catio where cats can roam freely.
The community response has been deeply moving for Pankiewicz as he works to rebuild. "The response from the community was just as emotional as the fire was, but in the opposite. The fire made us cry tears of sorrow, and the community made us cry tears of gratitude," he said. The overwhelming support has enabled the sanctuary to move forward with construction plans that will provide a safer environment for the animals while continuing to honor the memory of Pankiewicz's wife and serve the community's most vulnerable pet owners.
