Julio Zayas homered twice and Trey Snyder continued his hot stretch at the plate as the St. Lucie Mets defeated the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 8-2 Tuesday night at Clover Park.
The victory in the series opener was St. Lucie's fifth win in its last six games.
The Mets held a 1-0 lead through two innings before breaking the game open with four runs against Fort Myers starter Eric Hammond in the third.
Randy Guzman drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home the first run of the inning. Snyder followed with a two-run double before scoring on a throwing error after Antonio Jimenez singled, extending the Mets' lead to 5-0.
Jimenez added a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to make it 6-0.
Zayas provided the rest of St. Lucie's offense with solo home runs in the sixth and eighth innings. He became the second Mets player this season to record a multi-homer game, joining Guzman.
Zayas finished 3-for-4 with his fifth and sixth home runs of the season.
Snyder also went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. He has collected seven hits over his last two games.
St. Lucie starter Conner Ware pitched three scoreless innings, allowing no runs while striking out four.
Emilio Obispo earned the win after allowing two runs on two hits over four innings. He walked three and struck out three.
Zack Mack pitched a scoreless eighth inning before Elwis Mijares worked the ninth and induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
The Mets improved to 9-14 in the second half and 42-47 overall. The Mighty Mussels fell to 10-13 in the second half and 47-41 overall.
The teams will play the second game of the series Wednesday at Clover Park. The Mets will hold their annual Summer Camp Day, with first pitch scheduled for 11:10 a.m.
