Discarded fishing line will find new purpose as friendship bracelets when art and marine conservation come together at the Vero Beach Museum of Art. The museum and Coastal Connections will team up for a free Second Saturday program beginning at 10 a.m. Aug. 8, with hands-on activities, gallery tours and lessons about protecting local marine life.
Coastal Connections will lead a hands-on activity in the Laura and Bill Buck Atrium, where visitors can make friendship bracelets using recycled fishing line collected from local waterways. Participants also can learn about the organizations Fishing Line Recycling Program. The museum has adopted the fishing line recycling tube at the Riverside Park boat ramp.
Kendra Bergman, founder and executive director of Coastal Connections, said the partnership with the museum is a great example of how the organization is working with the community to introduce everyone to marine conservation and environmental protection in unique ways. Second Saturday includes free museum admission throughout the day. Coastal Connections was founded in 2017 with a mission of advancing the survival of sea turtles by educating and connecting people to the environment.
