The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra will perform Landscapes Legends on Sunday, August 10, at the Community Church of Vero Beach, 1901 23rd Street. The concert features works exploring magic and myth, with guest conductor Patrick Phillips leading the performance.
The program opens with Dukas' The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the 11-minute orchestral tone poem famously depicted in Disney's Fantasia. The concert includes the world premiere performance of Kenneth Fuchs' Cloud Slant, a work capturing light, motion and atmosphere. Fuchs won the 2018 GRAMMY Award for Best Classical Compendium for an album recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra for Naxos.
Vero Beach music and arts leader Dr. Jacob Craig will perform Edward MacDowell's Piano Concerto No. 2, a deeply romantic and expressive three-movement work composed in 1885. The work holds the distinction of being the first major piano concerto written by an American. Renowned pianist Van Cliburn chose MacDowell's Piano Concerto No. 2 at age 18 for his professional orchestral debut.
The concert concludes with Pines of Rome, the 1924 orchestral tone poem by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi. The 22-minute work dramatically depicts four different locations around Rome framed by iconic pine trees.
