A Costco in Stuart reopened Friday with limited services after an electrical fire forced the store to close Thursday afternoon. The store at 3173 S. Kanner Highway is now open but only dry goods are available for purchase because the refrigeration unit remains non-operational, according to the Stuart Police Department.
The electrical fire was reported at around 4 p.m. Thursday.
The Stuart Police Department said out of an abundance of caution the store was closed following the fire, which was extinguished by Stuart and Martin County Fire Rescue personnel. Authorities urged individuals to avoid the area while the store remained closed Thursday.
Store management confirmed to the Stuart Police Department that customers cannot purchase refrigerated or frozen items until the refrigeration system is restored. The police department shared the update about the limited inventory available at the location.
The Costco location serves Stuart and surrounding Martin County communities. The store had been closed for an undetermined amount of time Thursday while fire rescue personnel remained on scene to ensure the building was safe to reopen.
