For the Packard family, roofing has never been simply a business passed from one generation to the next. It has been a trade learned firsthand, a family responsibility and, over time, a connection to the communities the company serves.

Packard Roofing & Waterproofing has grown from a South Florida roofing company into a multigenerational operation serving homeowners across Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties.

The Port St. Lucie family business was founded in Miami in 1971 by Raymond M. Packard and David R. Packard. More than two decades later, the company expanded to Port St. Lucie in 1994, establishing the Treasure Coast operation that now serves customers across Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties.

Today, the company is led by third-generation siblings Brian Packard and Stephanie Packard Smith.

Brian's path into the family business started well before he was old enough to run one. As a teenager, he spent summers cleaning and organizing the warehouse and service yard. Later came tear-off crews, repair work, and eventually handling residential and commercial projects himself.

Stephanie's history with the company also stretches back decades. She joined during the hectic aftermath of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, when South Florida roofing companies were dealing with enormous demand while Packard Roofing was also recovering from storm damage to its own facilities. She went on to become a central part of the company's office operations.

Brian relocated from Miami to Port St. Lucie in 2021 as the family prepared for another transition. Following their father David Packard's death in 2022, Brian and Stephanie took responsibility for leading the company into its third generation.

A business built around the Treasure Coast

Packard Roofing's headquarters at 2182 NW Reserve Park Trace places the company beside PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, with much of its work concentrated throughout the Treasure Coast.

The company handles roof repairs, roof replacements, new roof construction, and maintenance for homeowners throughout Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties.

That local focus matters in a region where roofs face intense sun, heavy rainfall, tropical weather, and wind-driven rain. For homeowners, problems can range from persistent leaks and storm damage to aging roofs that have reached the end of their useful lifespan.

Packard Roofing's website also provides homeowners with information about issues such as hurricane preparation, wind damage, roof leaks, and deciding when a roof should be repaired rather than replaced.

For a company with decades behind it, that focus reflects an effort to remain useful to homeowners before they ever need a major roofing project.

Experience that stayed with the company

The Packard family is not the only long-term presence in the business.

Superintendent Mark Hanna has worked with the company for more than 30 years, beginning as a repairman before moving into a leadership role overseeing repair and replacement work. His responsibilities now include supervising projects, preparing estimates, and often serving as one of the first people customers meet when they contact the company.

That kind of employee longevity fits the broader story of a company that has transitioned across three generations without abandoning its family-business identity.

Packard's philosophy, according to the family, has remained centered on straightforward communication, quality materials, and workmanship the company is willing to stand behind. The company says many customers return when they move to another home or recommend Packard to younger generations of their own families.

Looking toward another generation

More than five decades after the company was founded, Packard Roofing is operating in a Treasure Coast that looks very different from the one it entered in the 1990s.

Port St. Lucie has grown around it. PGA Village and surrounding communities have expanded. New homes continue to rise while existing roofs move through the repair and replacement cycle that comes with age and Florida weather.

The business has changed with that growth, but its leadership still describes Packard in distinctly family terms.

For Brian, continuing the company means carrying forward standards established by his grandfather and father rather than simply preserving a business name. He has described honesty, hard work and quality craftsmanship as values passed down through three generations.

Packard Roofing & Waterproofing provides roof repair, replacement, maintenance, and new-roof construction throughout Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties.
