Heavy rain flooded roads, front lawns and driveways in several Vero Beach neighborhoods Monday, prompting deputies to urge residents to stay off roads and avoid driving through floodwaters. Deputies warned that conditions remained unsafe after rounds of rain moved through the area.
Water covered streets and properties along 41st Avenue and 12th Street, about a mile from Glendale Elementary School. Neighbors said they had never seen flooding this severe in the area. Residents said steady rain throughout the day overwhelmed drainage systems, sending water into neighborhood streets and yards.
A photo shared by the sheriff's office showed only the roof of an SUV above the floodwaters at one point. Residents continued waiting for the water to recede.
