A child died and another was hospitalized after a bicycle collided with a FedEx truck Monday afternoon in Fort Pierce, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The crash happened around 3:07 p.m. in the 600 block of East Midway Road. Two juveniles riding a bicycle collided with a FedEx truck, and one child was pronounced dead at the scene. The second child was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Officials have not released the identities or ages of the children involved in the collision. No additional details about what led up to the crash have been released. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
Neighbors who live near the scene say it is a common area where people ride bikes. Megan Sharma, who lives nearby, said the tragedy is horrible. "We see kids going up and down the sidewalk all the time.
Both sides, our side and the opposite side. It's unfortunate that it happened," Sharma said. "It's really tragic that a child died."
Sharma said tragedy also took place along East Midway Road in 2020 when a young adult on a motorcycle was hit by a car. She warned others about the dangers of the roadway. "Look both ways before you cross the street.
Be weary of other vehicles, it's a dangerous, very dangerous highway," Sharma said. The incident remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
