Detective Jennifer Diaz with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office said the case required outside expertise and months of additional testing before charges could be filed against Nicole Maxwell, Robert Maxwell, and Vikki Koon. The medical examiner had to seek out outside experts to provide an examination for the child, and based on results, the process took several weeks and even months, Diaz said.
A neighbor named Suzan who lives across the street from the home said she had concerns about the children's living conditions and believes the arrests are long overdue. Suzan said two of the boys would knock on her door and she would give them food and something to drink because the kids were so hungry and starving. Suzan said she had been inside the house and it was unlivable, with sheets of plywood covering holes in the mobile home's floor. Investigators said on Aug. 20, 2025, the 3-month-old was rushed to the hospital after the boy's grandfather messaged the mother saying the child was sick, but it was too late.
