The St. Lucie Mets split a doubleheader with the Daytona Tortugas on Wednesday at Clover Park, falling 8-4 in the opener before rallying for an 11-10 victory in 10 innings in the nightcap. The twin bill made up a June 20 rainout. John Smith III delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the 10th inning, scoring Wyatt Vincent and Vladi Gomez after Daytona had taken a 10-9 lead in the top of the inning.
The Mets forced extra innings after erasing a three-run deficit in the seventh. Gomez's two-strike, bases-loaded double tied the game 6-6 with two outs. Both teams scored in the eighth before trading two-run homers in the ninth. Daytona's Dylan King put the Tortugas ahead 9-7, but Julio Zayas answered with a game-tying two-run homer for the Mets.
Gomez finished 4 for 5 with three doubles, two RBIs and two runs. Smith III went 2 for 5 with three RBIs, while Zayas was 3 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Daytona prospect Aaron Watson earned the win in his Single-A debut, limiting the Mets to two runs over five innings despite allowing eight hits.
In the first game, the Tortugas took control early, capitalizing on two Mets throwing errors in the first inning before scoring four runs in the fourth, highlighted by Adolfo Sanchez's solo home run. The Mets collected 10 hits in the loss. Elian Peña went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, while Aiden Robbins and Bohan Adderley each had two hits.
Kuhio Aloy recorded the first hit of his professional career with a fifth-inning single. The Mets now stand at 14-22 in the second half and 47-55 overall, while Daytona is 23-13 and 44-58.
