Detective Jennifer Diaz of the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office described the mobile home in the 800 block of Silverstream Circle in Fort Pierce as mostly uninhabitable. The house was extremely hot, there was a bug infestation in the home, a lack of food, and the home was unsafe for walking, she said during a July 27 press briefing. There was not an entry way that investigators could safely make entry into.
Diaz said it took nearly a year for charges to be brought against the caregivers because it was a very complicated investigation. With the death of a child, investigators had to seek out outside experts, which can take several weeks or even months. In questioning the biological mother, Diaz said the woman showed a lack of emotion and lack of empathy to the child. Diaz, the biological mother of two and the foster mother of 11, said the case was very hard and the way the child ended their last days of life was very sad for her.
