Port St. Lucie officer resigns after allegedly leaving scene where man later died by suicide

A Port St. Lucie police officer resigned in April following allegations of neglect during a March incident at the Treasure Coast Church of God Worship Center on Savona Boulevard, according to an internal affairs report. The report alleged Officer Mathew Brown came across a car with a man inside, looked, and then immediately left the scene.

Fifteen minutes later, another officer spotted the same car and discovered the man inside had died by suicide. Officer Brown arrived as backup but allegedly did not inform anyone about his earlier encounter with the vehicle and later claimed he did not see anything.
